This is a working overview of pentadecapeptide, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.
Reviewed 2025-11-07. Anything still debated is marked as such rather than presented as settled.
Most early work on this peptide originated in the 1990s from a research group in Zagreb, Croatia, relying on animal models and cell cultures. Reported observations included effects on gastrointestinal lesion healing, tendon fibroblast migration, and blood vessel formation under controlled laboratory conditions. These findings come predominantly from rodent studies and in vitro assays rather than from human trials. Controlled human data remain limited, and the degree to which animal results translate to human physiology is an open question rather than a settled fact.
Within the research literature, the peptide is discussed through several provisional mechanisms, including cytoprotection, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interaction with the nitric oxide system. None of these mechanisms is fully characterized, and no single pathway is universally accepted. Review articles typically note the gap between consistent animal findings and sparse human evidence. The compound is classified as a research chemical rather than an approved pharmaceutical, which shapes how studies are designed, funded, and reported.
Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the activity observed in animal models. The most frequently cited involve signaling through vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and modulation of the nitric oxide system. Researchers have also described interactions with protective pathways in the gut lining. These proposed mechanisms appear in the literature as hypotheses supported by preclinical observations, not as confirmed pathways in humans. The precise way the peptide produces its reported effects, and whether those effects carry across species, remain areas of active and unresolved investigation.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide, meaning it consists of fifteen amino acids joined in a single chain. Its sequence is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val, a fragment corresponding to part of a larger protein found in human gastric juice. The peptide was first described in the 1990s by researchers in Zagreb who were studying gastric protective factors. It is not a naturally circulating hormone; it is a laboratory-made fragment derived from a stomach protein. The name is an abbreviation of body protection compound, with the number referring to the fragment's position in the source protein.
Most published work on BPC-157 comes from animal experiments rather than controlled human trials. Rodent models have examined its effects on gastrointestinal lesions, tendon and ligament injury, and blood vessel formation. These studies are often small and originate from a limited number of research groups, which affects how broadly the findings can be generalized. No large randomized human trial has been reported in the peer-reviewed literature. Discussion of the compound therefore rests largely on preclinical data, and questions about its effects in people remain open rather than settled.

The peptide was first described in the early 1990s by a group studying gastric secretions and tissue repair. Its fifteen-residue chain is usually written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV in single-letter code. The free peptide has the formula C62H98N16O22 and a theoretical mass near 1419.5 daltons. These identifiers are established chemical facts that can be checked against standard peptide databases. There is no ambiguity about the primary structure.
Most published findings come from rodent experiments using induced injury or surgical models. Human reports remain scarce and are largely observational, which limits how much can be stated with confidence. Questions about absorption, distribution, metabolism, and clearance in people are still open. Dose translation between species is likewise unresolved. Researchers tend to read the animal literature as a starting point rather than a settled account.
Some properties, such as the peptide's sequence and molecular mass, are firmly established. Other claims, particularly about mechanism and clinical benefit, remain open questions. Proposed mechanisms include effects on nitric oxide signaling and on cell migration, but these are hypotheses supported by limited evidence. Reviewers often note that the field lacks large controlled human trials. Positive animal findings are best treated as signals for further study rather than as settled conclusions.
Most published studies examine BPC-157 in animal models rather than in humans. Common subjects include rats and mice, and researchers often use models of tissue injury, surgery, or induced inflammation. Reported endpoints include healing rates, blood vessel formation, and markers of tissue repair. These designs provide controlled comparisons, but findings in animals do not automatically transfer to people. Human clinical data remain limited and are frequently described as preliminary.
. The americium-241 and curium-242 isotopes also were produced by irradiating plutonium in a nuclear reactor. The latter element was named after Marie Curie and her husband Pierre who are noted for discovering radium and for their work in radioactivity. Bombarding curium-242 with α-particles resulted in an isotope of californium 245Cf in 1950, and a similar procedure yielded berkelium-243 from americium-241 in 1949. The new elements were named after Berkeley, California, by analogy with its lanthanide homologue terbium, which was named after the village of Ytterby in Sweden. In 1945, B. B. Cunningham obtained the first bulk chemical compound of a transplutonium element, namely americium hydroxide. Over the few years, milligram quantities of americium and microgram amounts of curium were accumulated that allowed production of isotopes of berkelium and californium. Sizeable amounts of these elements were produced in 1958, and the first californium compound (0.3 μg of CfOCl) was obtained in 1960 by B. B. Cunningham and J. C. Wallmann. Einsteinium and fermium were identified in 1952–1953 in the fallout from the "Ivy Mike" nuclear test (1 November 1952), the first successful test of a hydrogen bomb. Instantaneous exposure of uranium-238 to a large neutron flux resulting from the explosion produced heavy isotopes of uranium, which underwent a series of beta decays to nuclides such as einsteinium-253 and fermium-255.
Several previous attempts have been made to create glucose-responsive insulin, with varying degrees of success. In the 2010s, Eli Lilly and Company developed an experimental basal insulin analogue called peglispro (BIL), which showed a prolonged and flat activity profile with hepato-preferential action. Although BIL demonstrated improved glycemic control, reduced nocturnal hypoglycemia, and less weight gain compared to insulin glargine, it was associated with increased liver fat, triglycerides, and liver enzyme levels. Due to these concerns and the uncertain regulatory pathway, Lilly discontinued the development of BIL in 2015. Other experimental analogues that are in development include LAPS Insulin115, an ultralong analogue being researched by Hanmi Pharm, and two basal oral analogues in development by Novo Nordisk, OI338 and OI320.
== PLP-enzymes == PLP is retained in the active site not only thanks to the lysine, but also thanks to the interaction of the phosphate group and a phosphate binding pocket and to a lesser extent thanks to base stacking of the pyridine ring with an overhanging aromatic residue, generally tyrosine (which may also partake in the acid–base catalysis). Despite the limited requirements for a PLP binding pocket, PLP enzymes belong to only five different families. These families do not correlate well with a particular type of reaction. The five families are classified as fold types followed by a Roman numeral.

Skittles are commonly used to effectively treat hypoglycemia in diabetics. In July 2022, a lawsuit seeking class-action status was filed in California regarding the continued use of titanium dioxide as a coloring agent. The lawsuit was voluntarily dismissed without prejudice in November 2022. In March 2023, Democratic California Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel introduced Bill 418 to the California Assembly that would ban production, sales, and consumption of all foods and drinks (for example Skittles, Pez, Sour Patch Kids, Campbell Soup, etc.) that contain titanium dioxide and four other harmful additives, propylparaben, red dye 3, brominated vegetable oil, and potassium bromate, across the state of California, all five of which have been linked to causing cancer and other health problems. At least three of these additives are banned by the European Union from use in food. Titanium dioxide was removed from the list before the bill was voted on. The bill passed, making California the first US state to adopt the European Union's ban on these cancer-causing chemical additives from being used in food and drink products.

The climate of the islands is oceanic, with moderate and fairly uniform temperatures and heavy rainfall. Fogs are almost constant. Summer weather is much cooler than Southeast Alaska (around Sitka), but the winter temperature of the islands and of the Alaska Panhandle is nearly the same. According to the Köppen climate classification system, the area southwest of 53.5°N 167.0°W / 53.5; -167.0, on Unalaska Island, has a "Subpolar Oceanic Climate" (type "Cfc", as does Reykjavík, Tórshavn, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia and the Auckland Islands), characterized by the coldest month averaging above 0 °C (32 °F), one to three months averaging above 10 °C (50 °F), and no significant precipitation differences between seasons. To the northeast of that point, the climate becomes "Subarctic With Cool Summers And Year Around Rainfall" (type "Dfc", like Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Murmansk, St. Moritz, and Labrador City), where it is similar albeit colder, with the coldest month averaging below 0 °C (32 °F). During the winter, the islands become the center of a semi-permanent low-pressure area called the Aleutian Low. The mean annual temperature for Unalaska, the most populated island of the group, is about 38 °F (3 °C), being about 30 °F (−1 °C) in January and about 52 °F (11 °C) in August. The highest and lowest temperatures recorded on the islands were 78 °F (26 °C) and 5 °F (−15 °C), respectively. The average amount of annual rainfall is about 80 inches (2,000 mm); Unalaska, with about 250 rainy days per year, is said to be one of the rainiest places within the U.S.
== Structure == The Gβγ subunit is a dimer composed of two polypeptides, however it acts functionally as a monomer, as the individual subunits do not separate, and have not been found to function independently. The Gβ subunit is a member of the β-propeller family of proteins, which typically possess four to eight antiparallel β-sheets arranged in the shape of a propeller. Gβ contains a seven-bladed β-propeller, each blade arranged around a central axis and composed of four antiparallel β-sheets. The amino acid sequence contains seven WD repeat motifs of about 40 amino acids, each highly conserved and possessing the Trp-Asp dipeptide that gives the repeat its name. The Gγ subunit is considerably smaller than Gβ, and is unstable on its own, requiring interaction with Gβ to fold, explaining the close association of the dimer. In the Gβγ dimer, the Gγ subunit wraps around the outside of Gβ, interacting through hydrophobic associations, and exhibits no tertiary interactions with itself. The N terminus helical domains of the two subunits form a coiled coil with one another that typically extends away from the core of the dimer. To date, five β-subunit and eleven γ-subunit genes have been identified in mammals. The Gβ genes have very similar sequences, while significantly greater variation is seen in the Gγ genes, indicating that the functional specificity of the Gβγ dimer may be dependent on the type of Gγ subunit involved.
=== Compared to quantity of carbohydrate === Depending on quantities, the number of grams of carbohydrate in a food can have a bigger impact on blood sugar levels than the glycemic index does. Consuming less dietary energy, losing weight, and carbohydrate counting can be better for lowering the blood sugar level. Carbohydrates impact glucose levels most profoundly, and two foods with the same carbohydrate content are, in general, comparable in their effects on blood sugar. A food with a low glycemic index can have a high carbohydrate content or vice versa; this can be accounted for with the glycemic load (GL) where GL = GI × grams of carbohydrate per serving/100.
Under Grimond (who retired in 1967) and his successor, Jeremy Thorpe, the Liberals regained the status of a serious third force in British politics, polling up to 20% of the vote, but unable to break the duopoly of Labour and Conservative and win more than fourteen seats in the Commons. An additional problem was competition in the Liberal heartlands in Scotland and Wales from the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru who both grew as electoral forces from the 1960s onwards. Although Emlyn Hooson held on to the seat of Montgomeryshire, upon Clement Davies death in 1962, the party lost five Welsh seats between 1950 and 1966. In September 1966, the Welsh Liberal Party formed their own state party, moving the Liberal Party into a fully federal structure. In local elections, Liverpool remained a Liberal stronghold, with the party taking the plurality of seats on the elections to the new Liverpool Metropolitan Borough Council in 1973. On 26 July 1973, the party won two by-elections on the same day, in the Isle of Ely (with Clement Freud), and Ripon (with David Austick). In the February 1974 general election, the Conservative government of Edward Heath won a plurality of votes cast, but the Labour Party gained a plurality of seats. The Conservatives were unable to form a government due to the Ulster Unionist MPs refusing to support the Conservatives following the Northern Ireland Sunningdale Agreement. The Liberals obtained 6.1 million votes, the most it would ever achieve, and now held the balance of power in the Commons.

== Foreign relations == Throughout the period of its Unilateral Declaration of Independence (1965 to 1979), Rhodesia pursued a foreign policy of attempting to secure recognition as an independent country, and insisting that its political system would include 'gradual steps to majority rule.' Ardently anti-communist, Rhodesia tried to present itself to the West as a front-line state against communist expansion in Africa, to little avail. Rhodesia received little international recognition during its existence; recognition only occurred after elections in 1980 and a transition to majority rule. Rhodesia wished to retain its economic prosperity and also feared communist elements in the rebel forces, and thus felt their policy of a gradual progression to black majority rule was justified. However, the international community refused to accept this rationale, believing that their policies were perpetuating racism. This attitude was part of the larger decolonisation context, during which Western powers such as the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium hastened to grant independence to their colonies in Africa.

The drug has been implicated in the deaths of people from all walks of life—from homeless individuals to professionals—including teens and young parents. Because of the rising deaths across the country, especially in British Columbia where 1,716 deaths were reported in 2020 and 1,782 from January to October 2021, Health Canada is putting a rush on a review of the prescription-only status of naloxone in an effort to combat overdoses of the drug. In 2018, Global News reported allegations that diplomatic tensions between Canada and China hindered cooperation to seize imports, with Beijing being accused of inaction. Fentanyl has been discovered for sale in illicit markets in Australia in 2017 and in New Zealand in 2018. In response, New Zealand experts called for wider availability of naloxone. In May 2019, China regulated the entire class of fentanyl-type drugs and two fentanyl precursors. Nevertheless, it remains the principal origin of fentanyl in the United States: Mexican cartels source fentanyl precursors from Chinese suppliers such as Yuancheng Group, which are finished in Mexico and smuggled to the United States. In the past several months before February 2025, China began scheduling fentanyl precursors that are internationally banned.
== Medical uses == Vancomycin is indicated for the treatment of serious, life-threatening infections by Gram-positive bacteria of both aerobic and anaerobic types that are unresponsive to other antibiotics. The increasing emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) has resulted in the development of guidelines for use by the Centers for Disease Control Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee. These guidelines restrict use of vancomycin to these indications:
== Types == Popliteal pterygium syndrome, a congenital condition affecting the face, limbs, or genitalia but named after the wing-like structural anomaly behind the knee. Pterygium (eye) or surfer's eye, a growth on the cornea of the eye. Pterygium colli or webbed neck, a congenital skin fold of the neck down to the shoulders. Pterygium inversum unguis or ventral pterygium, adherence of the distal portion of the nailbed to the ventral surface of the nail plate. Pterygium unguis or dorsal pterygium, scarring between the proximal nail fold and matrix.

The sequence corresponds to a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice, so related sequences are natural. The isolated fifteen-amino-acid peptide supplied for research is produced synthetically. Whether the free fragment circulates naturally in humans has not been settled.
In most jurisdictions it is not an approved medicine and is handled as a research material. Import and sale rules differ by country, and some regulators have placed it in categories that restrict human use. Status can change, so current local rules apply.
Rodent models dominate, particularly rats with induced gastric lesions, tendon injury, or vascular disruption. These designs allow controlled comparison but differ anatomically and metabolically from humans. Results from such models are commonly cited as preliminary.
It is a chain of fifteen amino acids, referred to as a pentadecapeptide. The sequence is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. It corresponds to a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice.
